World's Smallest Dog

Beyonce, a Dachshund mix female puppy, is seen here being hand fed in this March 10, 2012 handout photo. Beyonce, who weighed just 1 ounce and could fit into a teaspoon when found, could be the world's smallest dog, according to animal rescuers in Northern California who found her abandoned in San Bernardino, California.

The rescuers have submitted an application to Guinness World Records for Beyonce to be considered the world's smallest dog. Picture taken March 10, 2012. REUTERS/Lisa Van Dyke/El Dorado Dog Photography/Handout

How to convert PDF files to ePub files to read on your iPad with iBooks

This tutorial will guide you through the process of converting PDF files so that they can be read in iBooks, the iPad application

Update: you can now read PDF files directly in iBooks, without having to convert them to .epub or any other format. See this tutorial for a quick overview of how to add PDF files to iBooks to read on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

This tutorial will remain up just in case someone wants to create an .epub of their PDF.
iBooks uses an ebook format called ePub. Using a free converter application (and ebook manager) called calibre you can quickly convert PDF (and other file formats) to .epub files, which you can then transfer to your iPad for reading in iBooks.

This tutorial will take you step by step through the entire process.
  1. Start out by finding a PDF you want to convert. In this example I used The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (which btw is free in the iTunes Book Store – but it’s a PDF I had handy, so that’s why I’m using it).
  2. Download and install calibre. It comes in versions for Windows, OS X and Linux. The interface is very slightly different in each version (not much). The screenshots in this tutorial are from the OS X version – but Windows users should have no problem at all following along.
  3. Once installed, open calibre. The first time you run calibre it will take you through a quick setup. The first thing you’ll want to do is specify your ‘ebooks’ folder. This is the location you’ll save your .epub files. Click the Change button.

  4. Select the folder you want to save all of your ePub files in.

  5. Back at the Welcome screen, click the Continue button.

  6. Select Apple from the Manufacturers list, and iPhone/iTouch + Stanza from the Devices list. Click Continue.

  7. You can ignore the information on this screen and click Continue. Or if you’re interested, give it a read. With that said, enabling Turn on the content server will not help us out.

  8. Now you’re at the main calibre interface. Click the Add books button in the top-left corner of the window.

  9. Navigate to a PDF file that you want to convert to an .epub file. Select it and click Open.

  10. Now click the small ‘arrow’ next to the Edit meta information and select Download metadata and cover files.

  11. calibre will now download additional information about your PDF/ebook – if it can find it. If it’s an eBook (as a .pdf), you may need to manually enter the book title and author name if it isn’t present when you load it into calibre initially.

  12. When it finds the additional meta data and a book cover, it will appear in the bottom pane of the calibre window.

  13. Now we’ll start the actual conversion process. Make sure your PDF file is selected in the main list of books, and then click the small arrow next to the Convert E-books button. From the list that will appear, select Convert individually

  14. You’ll be prompted with a “summary” window prior to calibre making the final conversion. Click the OK button.

  15. Depending on the size of your PDF/eBook the conversion process will vary. It took less than 10 seconds to convert my 200 page PDF. If you’re using a Mac and have growl installed, you’ll get a window notifying you that the conversion has finished.

  16. And now in the folder you specified way back in step #3 will contain an .epub version of your PDF. This is the file we’ll upload to your iPad.

  17. Connect your iPad to your Mac or PC, and launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu select File -> Add to Library…

  18. Navigate to your newly created .epub file, select it and click Choose.

  19. The new .epub file will now appear in the Books section of iTunes.

  20. If you sync all your Books to your iPad, select your iPad in iTunes and select the Books tab. After confirming your new .epub book is listed, click the Sync button.

  21. Now launch iBooks on your iPad. There it is! From PDF to ePub and into iBooks.

RIM nearing Sunset...

There is no way to sugarcoat today’s announcement from once great Blackberry maker, RIM.  They are, after years of putting their heads in the sand, finally taking drastic measures to change course including getting rid of former Co-CEO and current board member Jim Balsillie as well as their their CTO and COO (loooong overdue).  Revenues are way down as are unit sales and prospects.
But what is the way out of this mess?  They say they are looking for ”strategic business-model alternatives”. They are also considering a sale. Where is there any value in the company?

Their current devices are taking a nosedive in value. BlackBerry 10, even if it is amazing (and when is the last time amazing came out of Waterloo?) still has an uphill battle against iOS, Android and even Microsoft who is fighting to get out of that “other” category. The low end is getting slammed by cheap Androids while Apple is sucking up the corporate and high end market.
The first fruits of that QNX labor, the PlayBook, sold 500,000 units last quarter…and that was at drastically below build costs pricing. RIM says the first BlackBerry 10 devices will be available in late 2012…which is a year later than needed.

Even their once ubiquitous Blackberry Enterprise Servers that sit between corporate Mail servers and carriers/mobile devices are now obsolete.

Steve Jobs said in a conference call a few years ago that Apple considered Blackberry to be “in the rear view mirror”. Perhaps he realized that not even somebody with his own turn-around talents could rescue RIM.

NoyNoy's term will be just like another epic fail due to uncontrollable Oil Prices

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III cannot afford to rest on his high trust ratings, a coalition against oil price increases launched on Monday warned.

If left unaddressed, the rising cost of fuel may see Aquino's popularity disappear, Bayan Muna party-list Representative Teddy Casino said. He said rising fuel issues cause hunger and is not just a "political issue."

Barangay chairman Francisco Mariezeta III from Sampaloc, Manila, told reporters he is opposing oil price hikes because they were affecting the peace and order situation in his village. He said he had to mediate between a husband and wife who were fighting because there was no dinner on the table. The wife said she was not given enough money to buy cooking gas.

"It's almost election time, isn't it? This is an issue among the voters," he said.

5000 e-trikes to ply Manila, Boracay, Palawan

There may soon be a new King of the Road: energy-efficient electric tricycles that promises to cut down carbon emissions and noise pollution.

The Department of Energy e-trike project was among 12 projects that the National Economic and Development Authority Board approved in its first meeting for the year.

Arnel Garcia, officer-in-charge of the DOE Alternative Fuel and Energy Technology Division, told Yahoo! Southeast Asia that they are already targeting the release of around 5,000 e-trikes within the year.

Most will be distributed in the National Capital Region and other key cities. According to a timeline from the ADB, e-trikes will also be distributed in top tourist sites, Puerto Princesa and Boracay.

No noise, no tailpipe emissions

According to a briefing paper from the Asian Development Bank, which paid for a pilot project to test the e-trikes last year, the electric engines in the e-trikes can use up 75 percent of energy to power the vehicle.

In contrast, the standard internal combustion engine has an energy efficiency of 20 percent. The rest of the energy generated by fossil-fuel fired engines is lost.

Driving an e-trike also will mean an estimated savings of P200 a day that could be used to pay off financing on the e-trikes, ADB said.

The DOE has also hired a Japanese contractor to check the soundness of the winning e-trike designs from a contest that ended this month.

The project will still have to undergo competitive international bidding.

Longer LRT and more NEDA projects

The NEDA Board has also approved a proposed P60-billion project to extend the Light Rail Transit-1 line.

The line currently runs from Roosevelt Station in Quezon City to Baclaran Station in Pasay City. The project will then extend the line 11.7 kilometers to Bacoor, Cavite. The extension will pass through Parañaque and Pasay and will have eight new passenger stations.

The NEDA Board also approved the following projects: Agus VI Hydroelectric Power Plant (Units 1 and 2) Uprating Project, Land Transportation Office Infrastructure and Information System (LTO-IIS) Project, Jalaur River Multipurpose Irrigation Project Phase II. Proponent, Umayam River Irrigation Project (URIP), Casecnan Multipurpose Irrigation and Power Project (CMIPP)–Irrigation Component Phase II, Bridge Construction Project for Expanded Agrarian Reform Communities (ARC) Development – Umiray Bridge, Integrated Natural Resources and Environmental Management Program (INREMP), Baler–Casiguran Road Improvement Project, Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Measures in Low-Lying Areas of Pampanga Bay Project, and the Samar Pacific Coastal Road Project.

The projects will cost the government an estimated P133 billion.

Angry Birds Space Tops 10 Million Downloads in 3 Days

When it comes to App Store gaming, Angry Birds by Rovio Mobile has been a smash hit with over 500 million copies soldsince it was released a few years ago. And the newest title to the series, Angry Birds Space, has been equally as successful by topping over 10 million downloads of its own in less than three days of availability. Rovio Mobile held a promotion with Walmart and posted promotional videos online to promote hype for the new addition to the bird-slinging franchise. In almost expected fashion, Angry Birds Space quickly rose to the top spot on App Store charts in dozens of countries worldwide just hours after its release. Angry Birds Space is 99 cents in the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

Apple in Pixar's Film- Monster Inc and Cars

In the most entertaining bit of news today, Matt Brian of The Next Web reports that many Disney Pixar films have references to Apple deep within them. (If you didn’t already know, Steve Jobs purchased Pixar from Lucasfilm in 1986 and became the CEO until Disney acquired the animation studio in 2006.) One of the most noticed references was that of theApple iPod headphones in Toy Story 3. Also in this third edition to the heart-touching story of toys that come alive is anApple Mac with Safari open on the screen – this is the
scene where Woody is mapping out a route to Sunnyside. Keep reading for the other references.

Next up is the original Cars, Pixar’s story of Lightning McQueen and companions. At 7:01, you can find an Apple branded number 84 race car on the tracks. In addition to this, Monster’s Inc. includes a rather comical reference to Apple’s “Think Different” campaign slogan from 1984 (pictured above). However, instead of using Apple’s slogan, they modified it a bit for the theme of the film.
As you can see, Steve Jobs definitely left a small mark of Apple on some of Pixar’s finest films and there are probably more out there yet to be found, so keep looking and let us know if you find something fun!

Monthly Earth Hour by Sen. Lito Lapid... Now he's talking!

As the world awaits Earth Hour 2012 on March 31, Senator Lito Lapid wants Filipinos to continue switching off their lights for an hour not only once a year, but every month.

Lapid has filed Senate Bill No. 3159 or the “Monthly Earth Hour Act of 2012” which seeks to declare the last Saturday of every month from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as Earth Hour.

“This proposed measure seeks to raise awareness on climate change by requiring everyone to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour every last Saturday of the month from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., during which the demand for energy consumption shall be limited, therefore optimistically reducing the production of greenhouse gases,” the senator said in the bill’s explanatory note.

The annually celebrated Earth Hour is a brainchild of World Wide Fund for Nature and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, where 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated. It has been adopted by several other cities around the world, including Manila in 2008.

Lapid noted that the first time the Philippines participated in the global event, a drop in power consumption of 79 megawatts registered in Metro Manila and up to 102 megawatts in Luzon. In 2009, the country was able to save 611 megawatts of electricity, the equivalent of shutting down a dozen coal-fired power plants for an hour, he added.

In his bill, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Education, Department of Interior and Local Government, and the Philippine Information Agency, in coordination with non-governmental organizations, are tasked to conduct a nationwide information, education and communication campaign to inform the public to participate in the proposed monthly Earth Hour.

Lapid stressed that the public should be aware “on the need to conserve energy and on the need to take action on climate change” in order “to reaffirm the fundamental right of every person to a balanced and healthful ecology.”

Ways to Move on from Unfaithful Relationships

Relationships are the backbone of our existence. It is human tendency to seek love and attachment. But things do not always work out as planned. It is also human tendency to stray and commit mistakes like infidelity. It is one thing to commit the mistake and other to be on the receiving end.

If you have experienced infidelity or unfaithfulness, there can be nothing which can soothe you. But, life goes on and you will also have to one day. Then, why not start from today? Read on to find how to cope with an unfaithful relationship.

Cry On

There is no point in hiding your pain and emotions. Give yourself that time to grieve and erase the pain in your heart. Make sure you do not bottle up your feelings and emotions as this might not be good in the longer run. Talk to your friend, sibling, parents, or colleague – anyone you are close to. Choose your confidante wisely though, someone who is your true well-wisher. Confide in that person and let go of yourself while grieving. Don’t hold back.

Is It That Bad?

All of us have different definitions of cheating. So, what did your partner actually do? Was it a date, a kiss, two-timing? What according to you is infidelity? If your partner hasn’t done something heinous and is worthy of forgiveness, then think over it. But again the choice and decision is completely yours. Take time and decide. If you decide to move on, then do it faithfully without having doubts.

Analyze And Understand

There is always a reason behind our actions. Sometimes we fail to understand that we ourselves lead others to hurt us. Figure out why your partner cheated. The reasons can be many. Maybe your partner was never the committed types, in which case you should consider yourself lucky that things came into light early.

Sometimes, our partners never let go of their ex-flames and they seek an opportunity to bring them back into their life. If that’s what happened to you, it happened for the best. In any case, your partner was not justified in cheating on you and do not try to justify the act.

Do Not Humiliate Yourself

Our pride is wounded easily when we fall out of a relationship. In this case, it is very easy to blame yourself brutally for the whole thing. You are not the one to be blamed, your partner is. Do not ever feel that you were being cheated because of your looks.

Do not be harsh on yourself by labeling yourself as fat, ugly, unattractive or anything demeaning. You have a heart of gold and believe in that. Someone deserving is worthy of your love and attention and have faith in destiny.
Something New

A break up they say is the best excuse for a makeover. Go for it – spend some on your looks or buy something which you wanted for long. Start a hobby – be it cooking, dancing, writing or music, the choice is yours completely. Take this time to understand yourself.
I Am Sorry

How do you cope when your partner seeks your forgiveness? Again, you are the best judge here. Do not make haste just because you have decided to punish your partner. Sometimes we stray and are sorry for that. Maybe you are the true love for your partner; in that case it never hurts to give a second chance. But again take your time and take it slow. If you have decided to give him/her a second chance, start by going on friendly dates and this time take time to analyze your relationship. Confide and commit when you are absolutely sure that you can trust again.

Whatever you do, refrain from starting a new relationship just to let go of your past. A rebound is as dangerous as infidelity and often leaves both the partners deeply hurt. Understand that you too deserve a faithful and loving relationship and believe in miracles.

Communication = Relationship

Communication is the building block of a relationship. Without communication we could not start a relationship with someone. Communication plays a vital role in everyone relationship. Relationship such as with your Girlfriend or Boyfriend, Parents, Friends, Colleagues, works and etc. started all from communication.

Communication is the activity of conveying information. Communication must be between two persons, parties or sides etc. Communication has been derived from the Latin word "communis", meaning to share. Communication requires a sender, a message, and an intended recipient, although the receiver need not be present or aware of the sender's intent to communicate at the time of communication; thus communication can occur across vast distances in time and space. Communication requires that the communicating parties share an area of communicative commonality. The communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the message of the sender. Feedback is critical to effective communication between parties.

As such we benefit from communicating by building those relationship with our love ones, family, friends etc. Since, this is the building block of any relationship, lacking communication may lead to fragile relationship susceptible to temptations. Temptation such as false, dishonest, untruthful, infidelity, and others.

Say for an example, you have a girlfriend and you both are working on a different company. Your only means of communication is via your company emails. But inside of your company you have your own messengers but only works internally. Then you have regular colleague that you are chatting with. Once your conversation with your colleague steps a little deeper by time, and you have a lesser time communicating with your partner, you'll end up seeing yourself that you are already hooked up communicating with your colleague instead of your partner, Thus will lead to deceitful relation with your partner as you are tempted to start a new one with your colleague. As earlier said, Communication is the building block of a relationship. On a another note, communication is also a factor for unfaithfulness.( See blog on Unfaithful Relationship)

Since we are all Human, we can balance how we will benefit from communicating with others. We have the power to affect other through communication. God gave us the freewill to do whatever we like and the Wisdom to choose from the right and wrong. So, I hope we still apply this principle when we are communicating and build our relationship.

Dianna Agron Leaving Glee? Actress Remains “Hush Hush” About Potential Last Day

Dianna Agron at the Louis Vuitton Show at Paris Fashion Week on March 7, 2012
We know Dianna Agron (Quinn) will be back on Glee post-hiatus, despite that would be life-threatening car accident/cliffhanger in the mid-season finale (thanks pics andteases!) – but what about beyond that? She still hasn’t been confirmed for Season 4, after all.

Of all the soon-to-be graduating seniors, Quinn’s definitely got the brightest (confirmed) future, so what comes next for the Yale-bound Cheerio?

Steel yourselves, Gleeks!

Though nothing has been confirmed or denied by the powers-that-be atGlee, Dianna made an appearance at Paris Fashion Week at a Louis Vuitton show, and told Women’s Wear Daily of her fate on the show, “I don’t know, it’s just been such a thrill and a joy, and I miss it. I always say whenever the last day is, if it’s happened or not, because you know, they want me to be very hush-hush, I think the moral of the story is, this is what I’ve grown up with and this has really been my entryway to this whole career.”

Errr, uhh, that’s some classic question evading, if you ask us!

Could it be that our dearest Quinn has already filmed her last ep of Glee? Quinn headin’ out on the highway of l-i-f-e would surely qualify as one of those “super-emotional” situations we’ve been promised are on the way!

Are we headin’ for heartbreak? (And by that we mean, you know, “Good on ya, Q, we’re just gonna missss youuu!”) We have to say, that “I miss it,” in the middle of the quote, prior to the “hush-hush” seems pretty telling…

What do you think? Me, I'm still hoping for Quinn to have a happy ending....even if she'll part away from next season..

Can Philippines keep Earth Hour top spot?

yahoo-feb15-story1-wwf

The Philippines, which holds the record for the best participation in Earth Hour since 2009, will again go dark at 8:30 pm on March 31.

This year, Earth Hour will have switch-off ceremonies in three major cities: Makati, Cebu, and Davao. Other cities and towns will also have their own ceremonies.

“To commemorate our country’s fifth Earth Hour, we thought it high time for WWF to observe the movement across the archipelago - which has always been what we’ve aimed for,” lawyer Angela Ibay, Earth Hour Philippines national director said.

Zynga Buys 'Draw Something' Creator OMGPOP

Well, that didn't take long. There's been rumblings over on TechCrunch for a few days now that Zynga was in acquisition talks with OMGPOP as a result of the smash hit Draw Something [$0.99 / Free ]. The original suggestions were that the purchase price would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $150m to $250m, as OMGPOP itself is a company that's already fueled by $17m worth of investor cash as is.

Zynga scheduled a call at 3:00 PM Eastern today to discuss a "news announcement," but the guys over at All Things D have the scoop early: Zynga has picked up OMGPOP for a cool $200m, which isn't too shabby considering two years ago they doled out $53m to buy Words With Friends creator Newtoy.

I've got mixed feelings about this news. On one hand, I'm glad that OMGPOP is reaping the rewards of creating a fantastically successful game. Zynga has proven in the past that they talk acquisitions first, but if you turn them down, they have no problem ruthlessly cloning your game instead. On the other, I really like Draw Something as it is now, and I'm really not looking forward to Zynga, well, Zynga-ing it up. But, I suppose Word With Friends is still a fun game, so, whatever.

I imagine the guys at OMGPOP will be popping some champagne bottles this afternoon, if they haven't already.

UPDATE: It's official. OMGPOP is now a part of Zynga. Also noted in the call: picture saving and chat as possible updates, people don't like the word "latrine," and over 1 billion drawings have been created since the game's launch. The more you know!

60TB drives made possible by Seagate’s new 1 TB/inch platter tech

CUPERTINO, Calif. – March 19, 2012 – Seagate (NASDAQ:STX) has become the first hard drive maker to achieve the milestone storage density of 1 terabit (1 trillion bits) per square inch, producing a demonstration of the technology that promises to double the storage capacity of today’s hard drives upon its introduction later this decade and give rise to 3.5-inch hard drives with an extraordinary capacity of up to 60 terabytes over the 10 years that follow. The bits within a square inch of disk space, at the new milestone, far outnumber stars in the Milky Way, which astronomers put between 200 billion and 400 billion.
Seagate reached the landmark data density with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), the next- generation recording technology. The current hard drive technology, Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR), is used to record the spectrum of digitized data – from music, photos, and video stored on home desktop and laptop PCs to business information housed in sprawling data centers – on the spinning platters inside every hard drive. PMR technology was introduced in 2006 to replace longitudinal recording, a method in place since the advent of hard drives for computer storage in 1956, and is expected to reach its capacity limit near 1 terabit per square inch in the next few years.
“The growth of social media, search engines, cloud computing, rich media and other data-hungry applications continues to stoke demand for ever greater storage capacity,” said Mark Re, senior vice president of Heads and Media Research and Development at Seagate. “Hard disk drive innovations like HAMR will be a key enabler of the development of even more data-intense applications in the future, extending the ways businesses and consumers worldwide use, manage and store digital content.”
Hard drive manufacturers increase areal density and capacity by shrinking a platter’s data bits to pack more within each square inch of disk space. They also tighten the data tracks, the concentric circles on the disk’s surface that anchor the bits. The key to areal density gains is to do both without disruptions to the bits’ magnetization, a phenomenon that can garble data. Using HAMR technology, Seagate has achieved a linear bit density of about 2 million bits per inch, once thought impossible, resulting in a data density of just over 1 trillion bits, or 1 terabit, per square inch – 55 percent higher than today’s areal density ceiling of 620 gigabits per square inch.
The maximum capacity of today’s 3.5-inch hard drives is 3 terabytes (TB), at about 620 gigabits per square inch, while 2.5-inch drives top out at 750 gigabytes (GB), or roughly 500 gigabits per square inch. The first generation of HAMR drives, at just over 1 terabit per square inch, will likely more than double these capacities – to 6TB for 3.5-inch drives and 2TB for 2.5-inch models. The technology offers a scale of capacity growth never before possible, with a theoretical areal density limit ranging from 5 to 10 terabits per square inch – 30TB to 60TB for 3.5-inch drives and 10TB to 20TB for 2.5-inch drives.
The 1 terabit per square inch demonstration extends a long line of storied technology firsts for Seagate, including:
  • 1980: ST-506, the first hard drive, at 5.25 inches, small enough to be widely deployed in early microcomputers, the precursor of the modern PC. The 5 megabyte drive cost $1,500.
  • 1992: The first 7200RPM hard drive, a Barracuda ® drive
  • 1996: The first 10,000RPM hard drive, a Cheetah ® drive
  • 2000: The first 15,000RPM drive, also a Cheetah hard drive
  • 2006: Momentus ® 5400.3 drive, a 2.5-inch laptop drive and the world’s first drive to feature perpendicular magnetic recording technology
  • 2007: Momentus FDE (Full Disk Encryption) drive, the industry’s first self-encrypting hard drive
  • 2010: Momentus XT drive, the first solid state hybrid hard drive, combining traditional spinning media with NAND flash, to deliver speeds rivaling solid state drives (SSDs)
Seagate achieved the 1 terabit per square inch breakthroughs in materials science and near-field optics at its heads and media research and development centers in Bloomington, Minnesota, and Fremont, California.
